UNEP Global Waste Management Outlook released

The Global Waste Management Outlook was released by UNEP. It was a first of its kind report on waste management at the global level.
It was jointly prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).
The purpose of the report is to generate awareness among policy makers and public in general about different sources of wastes, their impact on health and environment and finally, solutions to mitigate the associated problems.
Highlights of the report:
Total global arisings of municipal solid waste (MSW) is around 2 billion tonnes per annum.
Around 3 billion people worldwide lacking access to controlled waste disposal facilities.
Ewaste is the fastestgrowing waste stream all around the world due to increased consumer demand, perceived obsolesce, and rapid changes in technology and inventions of new electronic devices. Estimated that 41.8 million tonnes (Mt) of ewaste was generated in 2014, almost 25% more than the 2010 figure
Major constituents of ewaste are: rare earth metals like lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, gadolinium and dysprosium; precious metals such as gold, silver and palladium
The 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycleshould be employed to transform the problem of waste into a resource for economies.
Identified India as one of the major dumping sites in the world as it has become a major destination for unused ship breaking, outsourcing polluting industries, etc.
It cautioned India about the growing tendency of increasing per capita waste generation as a negative consequence of improving life style and economic development.
About UNEP:

The United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) is an agency of the United Nations that coordinates its environmental activities, assisting developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices.
UNEP also has six regional offices and various country offices.
Its activities cover a wide range of issues regarding the atmosphere, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, environmental governance and green economy.
UNEP has also been active in funding and implementing environment related development projects.
The World Meteorological Organization and UNEP established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988.
UNEP is also one of several Implementing Agencies for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol, and it is also a member of the United Nations Development Group.
UNEP has sponsored the development of solar loan programs, with attractive return rates, to buffer the initial deployment costs and entice consumers to consider and purchase solar PV systems. The most famous example is the solar loan program sponsored by UNEP helping 100,000 people finance solar power systems in India. Success in India’s solar program has led to similar projects in other parts of the developing world like Tunisia, Morocco, Indonesia and Mexico
