Uttarakhand gets early quake warning system

For the first time in India, a system to detect earthquakes has been installed in Uttarakhand (Uttarakhand has very high chances of getting an earthquake of magnitude 8 or greater).
This system will issue warnings 140 seconds before earthquakes of magnitude 5 occur.
The system is made by Space Dynamics, an Italian firm. It has already been installed in Japan, Italy and the U.S.
In India, the first system has been installed in Dehradun.
About Earthquake warning system:
An earthquake warning system is a system of accelerometers, communication, computers, and alarms that is used for regional notification of earthquake. This is NOT an earthquake prediction system.
How does it work?
An earthquake is caused by the release of stored elastic strain energy during rapid sliding along a fault.
The sliding will start at some location and progress away from this hypocenter in each direction along the fault surface.
The speed of the progression of this fault tear is slower than the speed of the resultant pressure and shear waves ( ie pressure wave travel faster than the shear wave).
So accelerometer measures the vibration when pressure wave hits it. This immediately is transferred to the alarm system to help people evacuate.
